New: Mark Di Suvero intrigues the Médoc

Mark di Suvero is one of the 21st century's most famous sculptors. His works are exhibited all over the world - Canberra, Toronto, Bonn, Berlin, Valenciennes, Stockholm… Today, for the very first time in Gironde La Winery and Château d'Arsac are offering the possibility for you to discover his monumental works.

At La Winery, it is the 16-ton sculpture Ulalu that occupies the park with its power. Created in 2004 in the artist's New York workshop and exhibited in 2006 at the Basel International Show, this work is highly representative of Mark di Suvero's art. Red-painted metal beams jut out from powerful stainless steel hubs. Depending on the visitor's perspective, this imposing work manages to deceive the eye: sometimes reduced to a few lines in the sky, sometimes a complex web of structures.

A few minutes away from La Winery, Fire Jump, a Mark di Suvero work created in 2000, has recently joined the permanent collection of Château d'Arsac. At this winemaking estate, a "Garden of Sculptures" is now home to 18 works by the greatest artists of our time. Fire Jump poses questions about shapes but also - and unlike Ulalu - the eventuality of movement, with its stainless steel flame rotating with the wind. As it awaits its oscillation, this semi-serious work plays on the light as it catches the sun's rays.

Placed in the Médoc as if in tribute, Ulalu and Fire Jump give an inkling of the creative energy of Mark di Suvero and his perfect sense of the occupation of space.

A rich cultural schedule

An Anglo-Saxon concept featuring for the first time in France, La Winery displays its cultural leanings with an art collection which was inaugurated in December 2006, with The Sun Tree, a sculpture by Susumu Shingu.

Over the months and years, new works have completed this collection: Man Measuring Clouds, a bronze by Jan Fabre, all the Caryatides by Bernard Pagès, the Chaos installation by Thoma Ryse, the screen-printing by Roy Lichtenstein, the photos by Richard Avedon and the coloured animals by William Sweetlove. As well as this permanent "gallery", La Winery also hosts temporary exhibitions three times a year.

Activity at La Winery also includes a rich cultural schedule of music, theatre, dance and other performances, as well as around 10 shows a year.
